Our Guide to Stony Brook

Fun Things to Do in Stony Brook

Stony Brook is a charming village with great dining and shopping and beautiful parks and beaches. It's an idyllic place to live and offers an easy commute. Here’s our guide to the best things to do and see in Stony Brook.

Fun Things to Do in Stony Brook

For a unique night out, head to the Jazz Loft in Stony Brook. This great spot is dedicated to preserving the heritage and history of jazz and offers amazing events throughout the year.

Best Parks in Stony Brook

Avalon Nature Preserve is one of the best parks on Long Island, not just in Stony Brook. It’s the perfect place to take a hike or just watch the ducks on the pond. You can enjoy the stone labyrinth, wooded paths, and even the sunflower field in the summertime.

Best Shops in Stony Brook

Stony Brook Village offers a plethora of small boutiques and shops along its scenic walkway. Cottontails is a charming children’s store that’s been there for ages, and has great gifts and clothing. Ben’s Garden has really pretty home decor. Stony Brook Chocolate offers handmade chocolates and even hosts birthday parties for kids.

Best Restaurants in Stony Brook

It’s hard to pick the best restaurants in Stony Brook, because there are so many to choose from.

If I had to pick one, it would be Green Cactus. Why? TACOS! I love a good taco and by far Green Cactus has always had some of the best.

If you’re looking for something a little fancier, try The Three Village Inn. They have a delicious French restaurant, Mirabelle, as well as a more casual tavern. They often host weddings, bridal showers, and other community events, too.

Best Things to Do in Stony Brook with Families and Kids

In the summer, West Meadow Beach is where you’ll spend your days if you have kids - it’s my favorite north shore beach. It’s perfect for little ones with the low tide sandbar, playground, brand new and super clean bathrooms, and splash park (and they usually have a Mr. Softee truck, too). There’s also a walking path where you can spot wildlife like turtles, osprey, deer, bunnies and more in the wetlands and nature preserve.

Reasons to Live in and Move to Stony Brook

If you work at Stony Brook University or the hospital, moving to Stony Brook is a no-brainer, as you’ll be super close to work. Stony Brook is also a commuter-friendly place to live, as it has its own LIRR stop and is only about 15 minutes north of the Long Island Expressway.

In terms of quality of life, Stony Brook is an idyllic place to live with plenty of museums, culture, beautiful parks, dining, and things to do. It’s a small town rich in Long Island history and beautiful to boot. If you’re looking for historical houses and a tight knit community, Stony Brook might be the place for you.
